What Strathmore actually needs from a siding job.
Wind decides most siding outcomes in Strathmore. Vinyl has to be hung so it can slide as it expands and contracts through a 60-degree annual range, with fasteners centred in the slots and left slightly loose. Fastened tight, a wall buckles in July and works its nails free in January, and on an exposed prairie lot the wind then finds every loosened panel and starts lifting. Most of the failed vinyl we replace here failed that way rather than from age.
That same exposure is why we recommend engineered wood to most Strathmore homeowners. It keeps its impact resistance in the cold, it comes in 16-foot lengths so a long exposed wall has fewer seams for weather to work at, and it can be repaired and repainted rather than needing a colour-matched panel that may be discontinued in a decade.
On the older streets and the surrounding farm properties, the priority behind the cladding is the same as everywhere: correctly lapped house wrap, head flashing over every opening, and kick-out flashing where a roof edge meets a wall. On acreage buildings with additions built at different times, those junctions are usually where we find the rot.

Full tear-off and inspection

What moves the number in Strathmore
Out on open prairie the number moves on wind detailing and on drive. Strathmore roofs need a starter course and edge metal specified for genuine exposure, plus a fastening pattern at the high end of what the manufacturer allows, and that adds material rather than labour. On the acreages outside town, the roof is often simple but the site is not, and material delivery and disposal cost more than they do on a lot inside the town limits.

For a home with roughly 2,000 to 3,000 square feet of wall, vinyl runs about $12,000 to $22,000, engineered wood $20,000 to $34,000, and James Hardie $24,000 to $45,000, including tear-off, house wrap, trim and flashing.
Common out here, and not something you have to live with. Rattling usually means panels are loose in their locks, either because they were fastened too tight and have worked their nails loose over successive summers, or because a course was never fully engaged. Sometimes a section can be re-hung properly; where it is widespread, replacement is the honest answer.
Not bad, but it is the material this exposure punishes most. It has to be hung loose to move, it gets brittle below about minus twenty, and long prairie walls give it more seams for wind to work at. If the budget points to vinyl we will install it properly and it will serve you. If there is room, engineered wood is the better answer here.
For most homes, engineered wood or fibre cement. Vinyl gets brittle below about minus 20 and cracks from impacts it would shrug off in summer, which matters in hail country. James Hardie is the premium answer if you are staying long-term or the elevation takes hard weather.
We do not recommend it. Going over the old siding means nobody ever sees the sheathing or the water barrier behind it, and hidden rot is common below windows and wherever a kick-out flashing was omitted. Tear-off is the only way to know what you are building on.
Regularly. Hail damages siding as well as roofs, particularly on west and north elevations, and it is frequently part of the same insurance claim. We document it with the roof so nothing gets missed.
