Most premium roofing gets designed somewhere mild and shipped to the prairies to take its chances. Euroshield is the opposite. It is manufactured at 9330 48th Street SE in Calgary, roughly 70 percent recycled tire rubber with about 95 percent total recycled content, and it was developed by people who watch the same hailstorms roll over the city that you do.
The reason rubber survives hail is mechanical, not marketing. A hailstone hitting a standard asphalt shingle transfers its energy into a brittle fibreglass mat, which fractures and sheds the granule layer that protects the asphalt underneath. The roof does not leak that day, it just starts ageing faster, permanently. Rubber deforms on impact and springs back. The energy goes into flex rather than fracture, so there is nothing to crack and no granules to lose.
We install Euroshield across Calgary and the surrounding communities. It is not the cheapest roof on our quote sheet and we will not pretend otherwise, but for a homeowner who has already paid a hail deductible once or twice, it is very often the last roof they buy.

The Euroshield profiles we install
Euroshield makes two families, slate and shake, in five profiles. Two of them are named after Alberta landmarks, which tells you something about who designed them. Panel sizes and weights below are the manufacturer figures, so you can check them against your own roof deck.
Rundle Slate
The heaviest slate profile and the deepest relief. Named for Mount Rundle, and the closest Euroshield gets to a genuine quarried-slate look.
Ranchlands Shake
Ultra-deep shadow lines and long vertical grain. Reads as a heavy hand-split cedar shake from the street.
Beaumont Shake
Vertical grooves and rich cedar grain in a lighter panel. The most common shake choice, and the easiest on a marginal deck.
Vermont Slate
A cleaner, flatter slate profile for homes where a tighter, more formal roofline suits the architecture.
Vermont Slate HP
The solid-core version. Same look, more mass, and the any-size-hailstone warranty for the first twenty years.
The warranty difference nobody explains properly
If you have been shopping premium roofs in Calgary, you have been told about Class 4 impact ratings more than once. Here is what that rating actually is: under UL 2218, a two-inch steel ball is dropped twenty feet onto the same spot on a sample twice. If the back of the sample does not crack, split or tear, it passes. That is the whole test.
It is a useful test, and a Class 4 asphalt shingle is genuinely tougher than a standard one. But passing a lab test is not the same as a manufacturer agreeing to pay when your roof gets hit. On almost every Class 4 asphalt product, hail damage is still your insurer’s problem, and increasingly your deductible’s problem.
Euroshield warranties the hail damage itself: up to two inches in diameter, on all profiles, for fifty years. The Vermont Slate HP profile is warrantied for any size hailstone for the first twenty. That is a manufacturer putting its own money behind the claim rather than pointing at a lab report, and it is the single strongest argument for the product in a city like this one.
It is also the question we would ask any roofer quoting you a "hail-proof" roof: is the hail protection warrantied, or just rated? The answer separates the two categories completely.
What a proper Euroshield install actually involves
Euroshield is a premium system and it rewards a careful install, which is the main reason we are comfortable quoting it. The panels are heavier and stiffer than asphalt, they are fastened differently, and the details at hips, valleys and penetrations are specific to the product rather than transferable from shingle work.
Every install starts with a full tear-off to the deck. We are not laying a fifty-year roof over material we cannot inspect, and the added weight makes knowing the condition of the sheathing non-negotiable. Any soft or delaminated sheets get replaced at the per-sheet price already on your quote.
From there it is the underlayment and membrane package, ice and water shield at every eave and valley and around every penetration, then the panels set out and fastened to the manufacturer’s pattern with the matching hip and ridge components. Off-cuts go back to the plant in Calgary for reprocessing rather than into the bin.
The attic gets checked as part of the job, same as any roof we do. A fifty-year roofing system over an attic that cannot breathe is fifty years of cooking the deck underneath, and no warranty covers that on any product.
Euroshield, Class 4 asphalt, or metal?
These are the three serious hail answers in Calgary, and the right one depends on how long you are staying and what you have already been through.
Class 4 asphalt is the value play. It costs $12,000 to $22,000 installed on a typical Calgary home, earns the same insurance discounts, and is a genuine step up from standard architectural. Choose it if the budget is the binding constraint or you are not certain how long you are staying.
Metal lasts 40 to 50 years, sheds snow beautifully, and runs $15,000 to $40,000 depending on whether you go screw-down or standing seam. Its weakness is precisely the thing Calgary does most: metal dents. A standing seam roof after a serious hail event is frequently a cosmetic insurance claim, not a structural one, but you still have to look at it.
Euroshield costs more than Class 4 asphalt and overlaps with metal at $16,000 to $28,000 installed. What it buys that neither of the others do is a warranty against the hail itself for fifty years, and a surface that does not dent, crack or lose granules when it is struck. If you have already replaced a hail-damaged roof once in this city, that is usually the argument that settles it.
