What Banff actually needs from a eavestrough job.
The dominant Banff eavestrough problem is not water, it is snow release. A steep mountain roof carrying a deep load will eventually let it go, and anything hanging at the eave is directly in the path. Fastening, hanger spacing, and in some cases snow retention on the roof itself matter far more here than the gauge of the aluminum.
Volume is the second consideration. Spring melt in the Bow Valley moves a large amount of water in a short window, and a five-inch run that is perfectly adequate in Calgary can be undersized on a steep Banff roof feeding two valleys. We size from the roof area draining to each outlet, and six-inch is a more common recommendation here than on the prairie.
Colour is worth a mention too. In a townsite where the Design Guidelines care about how the built environment reads against its setting, eavestrough, fascia and downspouts are part of that picture. We colour-match deliberately rather than defaulting to whatever is on the truck.

Eavestrough is the least glamorous part of an exterior and the part with the most direct line to your foundation. We form seamless 5-inch and 6-inch aluminum on site, so a run has no joints along its length to work loose through a 60-degree annual temperature swing, hang it on hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia, and pitch it so water actually moves instead of standing and freezing.

Each run is rolled to length at your house, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. Sectional gutter has a seam every ten feet, and every seam is a future leak here.

Five-inch handles most homes. Six-inch is the right call for large roof areas, steep pitches that dump water fast, and homes under mature trees.

What moves the number in Banff
Nothing about a Banff roof is priced like a Calgary roof, and the reasons are all administrative before they are technical. Material and colour have to satisfy the Banff Design Guidelines, the property sits on Parks Canada leasehold land inside a national park, waste handling has to be wildlife-safe, and approvals take time that has to be built into the schedule. Add the same high snow load and fire-rating requirements as the rest of the Bow Valley and the spread against a prairie quote is real.

Banff has a process worth understanding before you start. A like-for-like roof replacement does not require a development permit, but the Town asks that you submit a written description of the property, a photo of the current roof, and a physical sample of the proposed material for written approval before installation, even for like-for-like. Acceptable materials under the Design Guidelines include architectural or dimensional asphalt shingle, concrete tile, various metal roofs, and composite materials such as recycled rubber. If you are replacing a wood shake or shingle roof, the Town’s Combustible Roof Replacement Incentive pays $1,200 per home ($1,200 per half duplex) provided the new roof carries a Class A fire resistance rating and you complete a free FireSmart Assessment with the Fire Department first. We prepare the submission and the documentation as part of the job.

A run that is level or back-pitched holds water, a five-inch run fed by two valleys can simply be undersized, and too few downspouts creates a bottleneck. We measure the roof area draining to each outlet rather than matching whatever was there before.
Every winter. Standing water in a back-pitched run becomes a solid length of ice, and ice is heavy enough to pull hangers straight out of fascia and take the board with them. Correct pitch and sound fascia are what prevent it, not thicker aluminum.
