The material cost difference is small next to overflow at the foundation.
Usually pitch, sizing or outlet placement rather than blockage. A run that is level or back-pitched holds water, a five-inch run fed by two valleys can simply be undersized, and too few downspouts creates a bottleneck. We measure the roof area draining to each outlet rather than matching whatever was there before.
Every winter. Standing water in a back-pitched run becomes a solid length of ice, and ice is heavy enough to pull hangers straight out of fascia and take the board with them. Correct pitch and sound fascia are what prevent it, not thicker aluminum.
